Meet the Podcaster: Sixes & Sevens

We love shining a light on the incredible creators in our network. That’s why we’re sitting down with the hosts behind some of our favorite shows—to hear their stories, get behind-the-scenes insights, and maybe even learn a fun fact or two.
This month, we’re talking to Rugby League legends Todd Carney and Mitchell Pearce, the duo behind Sixes & Sevens. Their new twice-weekly podcast breaks down the latest NRL action, giving fans expert analysis with plenty of banter along the way. Ahead of kick-off, we caught up with Toddy and Mitch to chat about launching the show, their predictions for the season, and—most importantly—their go-to karaoke songs.
Interview with Sixes & Sevens
Acast: You guys dominated the field together as teammates for over a decade and I know fans will be delighted that you’ve reunited for the new show. Tell us about Sixes & Sevens. What inspired you to set up a podcast?
Toddy: We first started doing a podcast with Triple M last year called Footy Talk. As the year went on, we got lots of feedback on how we were going. A few people mentioned ‘start our own’ and here we are! The Hello Sport lads have been a good slingshot into the world of podcasts.
Acast: How have you found working together again and moving from the field to the commentator side? Is it a different ball game to playing footy?
Mitch: It’s a different ball game. Nothing compares to the ups and downs of playing Rugby League. Talking footy is easy and stress-free. It’s great to be able to give back to the game.
Acast: For anyone who hasn’t yet heard the podcast, tell us a bit about the format of the show. What have you got planned for upcoming episodes?
Mitch: The early parts of the poddy have been testing and trials. We are new to it all, but we want to make Monday a footy review show and dive into the games from the weekend in detail. Wednesday will be questions from fans and dig in-depth into more footy, some life stuff too and some stories.
Toddy: Some exciting guests will be coming on over the next few months too. Watch this space!
Acast: Let’s get down to it: what do you think of this season’s line up? How does the competition compare to the seasons you’ve played in the past?
Toddy: Melbourne, Panthers and Broncos for me are clear favourites, then you have Manly Sharks. The rest are making up the numbers for me.
Mitch: Every season is the same: you have your top-quality sides and other sides not as competitive, but the game is so fast now and every year gets quicker and more grueling for the players. The top four sides are going to be fighting hard to win it. There is definitely a little opening there for a few sides…
Acast: Do you have any early predictions for standout teams or players to watch this season?
Mitch: Besides the obvious Penrith and Melbourne? I would say Broncos and Manly. Player to watch is Ben Hunt and how he can help steer his beloved Broncos to a trophy.
Toddy: Melbourne or Panthers!
Acast: Which rivalry are you most excited to watch?
Mitch: The rivalry I love the most is Roosters and Souths. It never gets old!
Acast: It’s the $13m question on everyone’s minds: do you think Dylan Brown’s offer is a risk worth taking?
Toddy: If I was a club, I wouldn’t be signing him for 10 years. Maybe three years with a seven-year option haha. Dylan Brown is a great player but he’s not in the top five Sixes & Sevens for me.
Mitch: I’m not sure that long a contract is healthy for anyone involved. Dylan is a quality player but not for that long.
Acast: If you had all the money in the world, who would be on your dream NRL team?
Toddy: I bleed green so the Raiders. Cleary would be my first signing then Liam Martin followed by Tommy Turbo.
Mitch: my NRL dream team would be Nathan and Yeo … Munster and Turbo … Payne up front. They would be getting all the money to start.
Acast: And finally, a quick-fire round for fans to get to know you better.
